CAN-DO's Fighting Chance MMA Gym offers free and low-cost training and mentorship for at-risk youth, former foster youth, and people in recovery. The new Long Beach location is CAN-DO’s third community gym launched since 2019. The Fighting Chance courses are led by former LA foster youth turned pro MMA fighter, Chase Gibson. The CAN-DO x Fighting Chance gyms build discipline, life skills, and a strong, supportive community for hundreds of students each month.

Months after the storm, many residents — including retirees and veterans — remained displaced and without financial assistance. Despite billions raised for disaster relief, the town received virtually no support from FEMA or major aid organizations. A storm destroyed a bridge in Carrefore Feulle and resulted in hundreds of people forced to climb down a 40 ravine and back up other side just to get to the main road each day. CAN-DO cleaned the ravine, built a water well and rebuilt their bridge.

The 2010 earthquake caused significant structural damage to Bless-A-Child Orphanage, which is located about 15 miles outside of Port au Prince. CAN-DO made regular food and water drops to the orphanage following the earthquake and saw an influx in children being brought in for care.

Hurricane Isaac was a destructive and deadly storm that slammed the Gulf Coast. Louisiana was among the hardest hit. CAN-DO’s assessment shows approximately 7,000 homes were flooded, but only 10% of the families had flood insurance.

TUSCALOOSA TORNADO THE SITUATION: On April 27th, 2011, an EF4 tornado ripped through Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and other surrounding communities in Alabama. More than 1 million people in Haiti were displaced following the January 2010 earthquake. Thousands other structures, including clinics and schools were destroyed. Months and years following the disaster, very few sustainable structures have been rebuilt to support survivors of the quake.

Thousands of children in Haiti lost their parents in the 2010 earthquake. Many became orphans, overcrowding a system already strapped for resources. CAN-DO returned to Haiti to overhaul an orphanage in Carrefour where we made regular food drops and whose facility was run down and structurally damaged by the quake.

On January 12th, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Haiti. In less than 1 minute an earthquake claimed 200,000 lives, injured 300,000+ more and left 1.5 million people homeless.

A South Dakota blizzard with -60 degree temperatures left the people in Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in critical condition. They’ve been struggling to survive due to power outages and lack of access to food and blankets during the storm. CAN-DO’s goal was to provide immediate and direct assistance to the residents.

Hurricane Ike ripped through the Gulf Coast with 143 mph winds and left many communities suffering. Ike devastated the coastline from Louisiana to Kennedy County, Texas and left over 110 people dead. Damages from Ike in U.S. coastal and inland areas are estimated at $29.6 billion making it one of the costliest Atlantic hurricane of all time.

Heavy rains hit the village of Bigogwe, Rwanda causing landslides and catastrophic flooding. The local population of 1,976 was forced to relocate to a refugee camp one mile from the devastated village. Due to Bigogwe’s remote location in the mountains, just south of the Congo border, the disaster received no media coverage resulting in minimal aid.

Severe storms left areas of Iowa under 12 feet of water. It was a hydrological event involving most of the rivers in eastern Iowa. The flooding of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City were the most significant events. Recovery in particular for Cedar Rapids was considered to be a protracted and costly affair. For Iowa City, the level of damage was less than expected, but that of Cedar Rapids was greater than anticipated.
