On September 30th, CAN-DO officially launches Project Bless A Child — a full-scale rebuild of the Bless A Child Children’s Orphanage, which suffered severe damage and deep resource loss after the January 2010 earthquake. Located 15 miles outside Port-au-Prince, the orphanage is home to more than 30 children who’ve endured unimaginable challenges — yet still greet every new day with resilience and joy.
Founder Jean Alexandre has held the place together with sheer grit and heart, welcoming additional orphans with no hesitation despite an already strained environment. During our visits, one thing was clear: this orphanage operates like a true family. With support from the CAN-DO team and our donors, we can dramatically improve the daily quality of life for these kids.
Our rebuild goals include:
Repairing a 5x6 hole in the roof
Patchwork and structural fixes across the building
Rebuilding the damaged south wall where rain and security remain major issues
Completing and painting interior/exterior walls
Upgrading the kitchen and bathrooms for functionality and safety
Resurfacing unfinished floors
Supplying essential furniture and food
Beyond the physical repairs, CAN-DO will:
Drill and install a clean water well
Plant a garden to provide ongoing fresh vegetables
Implement programs and activities for the children
The CAN-DO team will work hand-in-hand with Haitian electricians, masons, plumbers, painters, cooks, and laborers — ensuring that the majority of materials and labor dollars stay within the local community
