Can-Do - Senior Center, Food Pantry

Reynolds Center:
Pearlington has its first Senior Center and permanent Food Pantry through the interfaith efforts of various relief groups & residents. The facility centered in the heart of Pearlington will provide a number of community organizations a place to gather, since the building is being planned to incorporate a meeting room suitable for citizen groups to meet. The structure, which is a historical building over 100 years old, and having made the trek from Logtown, and known locally as Reynold's grocery store, is being converted into the Reynolds Center, which will house the first Pearlington Senior Center, as well as the offices of the Pearlington Interfaith-Interagency Coordination Center, the Pearlington Recycling Cooperative, the Pearlington Community Garden and the location of the Pearlington Food Pantry.

In-kind Donations:
The building has been gutted and refurbishing has begun. There is a need for insulation and general building supplies. So far 50 sheets of sheet rock has been donated, as well as exterior doors, including a beautiful set of double doors for the front of the building. We are seeking Lowe's Gift Cards from donors so that we can continue the work. The Center is under the umbrella of an existing 501(c)3, so donations are tax deductible. Donation Gift Cards can be sent to Anisah David (Acting Coordinator) via the Pearlington Fire Dept., at the following address: 16006 Washington St., Pearlington, MS. We ask that all donations be specifically identified so we know if it is for general rebuilding needs of the Reynolds Center or if the gift is specific to the Senior Center, Food Pantry, Community Garden, Recycling Center or Coordination Center.

DONATE NOW
: Reynold's Center

Please send a memo stating the cash donation is to be sent to the Reynold's Center project in Pearlington! Otherwise the funds will go into general donations and may not get to Pearlington. The photos above show two angles of the building. One shows the "front" door which enters the section of the building which will house the Senior Center. It is planned to restore the large porch and then add rocking chairs for residents to enjoy.

Senior Center:
The main entrance leads into the Senior Center, which has a meeting room off to the right. To the back of the Senior Center is a kitchen area. The kitchen is planned as a part of the Senior Center, which will allow the Senior program to include a meal for the resident seniors. This facility will also double as a means to provide a site for elder care services to resident families who now find themselves trying to care for their aged parents while still trying to re-establish their homes and lives. The kitchen still needs all its fixtures such as a stove, refrigerator, commercial stainless steel sink and a dishwasher and counters. The Senior Center is seeking specific funding to purchase these items.

The Senior Center is seeking "lazy-boy" chairs and rocker or similar soft upholstery furniture with which to furnish the room. Additionally, end tables and other "living room" style furniture is desired. The Senior Center also will need air conditioner units or central air, so as to provide an adequate Cooling Station during the summer months.

Handicapped Accessibility:
The Reynolds Center is being designed to be handicapped accessible. Wheelchair ramps & wide entrance doors and hallways are planned to better service the needs of the handicapped. The Reynold's Center is planning to have two handicap accessible bathrooms in the main portion of the building, as well as a smaller bathroom in the Food Pantry section. We therefore are in need of suitable bathroom fixtures for the bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, plumbing pipe, floor tiles and cement boards, etc.

The community garden being planned will also be handicapped accessible, with a portion of the garden designed as a raised garden bed accessible to wheelchair bound residents.

Food Pantry:
Pearlington is soon to have a permanent food pantry as part of the Reynolds Center. The Pantry is scheduled to be housed in the east wing of the building (see photo) and will provide residents commonly needed commodities found in community-based food pantries. The Pantry will service the needs of all residents, regardless of raise, religion or creed. The facility will be handicap accessible.

Pearlington Recycling Center:
The Pearlington Recycling Center, which was established by Peter Rangelov and Anisah David, will be housed at the rear of the Reynolds Center and will continue to provide recycled materials for the benefit of Pearlington residents. So far a number of residents have donated their buildings for recycling and materials have been going to other residents needing materials. Materials include 2x4s, 2x6s, 4x4s, windows, vinyl siding, steel doors, etc.

Pearlington Recycling Center can use interior doors, exterior doors, paint, hinges, door knobs, working used appliances, shingles, even tools (i.e. hammers, shovels, etc). Donation deliveries can be arranged with Anisah.

Pearlington Community Garden:
The Pearlington Community Garden is spearheaded by a group of residents who seek to establish a garden for residents. The garden will provide an alternative space for residents whose own property may no longer be suited, due to contamination, with a place to garden.

Pearlington Interfaith-Interagency Coordination Center:
The Coordination Center is an informal collaborative effort by relief organizations and church groups. The group meets each week on Thursday evenings. Initially the group was meeting at the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance camp on Highway 604 in Pearlington, next door to the fire department. However, the coordination meetings will soon be taking place at the new facility, upon the completion of the meeting room.

If anyone wishes to obtain further details on the programs they can call 605-366-8273 and speak to Anisah.
